z.Free Crochet Charts Software

November 27, 2015 by Helena Asmus Lim Filed Under: Crochet - How To, General, HOW TO

I have been searching for a good crochet chart software for a long while now.  I think I have finally found one (named Crochet Chart Software) that will do much of what I need.  I have yet to use it fully but I wanted to give a heads up to anyone else who might be looking for just such a needful piece of software.  And the best news of all is that it is now free (open-source) – and available for both Windows and Mac users.

It is not the easiest thing to find on the net so if you are looking for a crochet charting software, I have written up “Crochet Charts Software – Where to Get?” for you convenience.

Crochet Charts v1-2

Now I better get on to learning more about how to use the software so I can actually produce the many half-formed crochet projects in my head.

zz.How to Crochet Flat Circle (sc)

September 17, 2015 by Helena Asmus Lim Filed Under: Crochet - How To, HOW TO

How to crochet a flat circle in single crochet (sc).  I am re-writing this entire post.  For the sake of clarity.

There are multiple ways of crocheting a flat piece of circular crochet.  You only have to ask Google.  But I find the best and easiest rule of thumb, if you are making your flat crochet with sc, is to start with 8 stitches.  And increase 8 stitches every row.

crochet flat circle sc

• Start with 8sc.
• Increase 8 stitches per row.

Addendum: I realise that the diagram above is a bit confusing.  I hope to correct that (if I get the time).  Meanwhile, please note that it is better to stagger (i.e. don’t make increases on top of each other) where you inc. on each row to avoid an obvious line of increases.  I will try to explain better later, … yes, when I have time.

zz.DIY – Basic Construct for the Crochet Slouchy Beanie

July 25, 2015 by Helena Asmus Lim Filed Under: Crochet - How To, HOW TO

I am going to detail a template or guide to create the shape which will turn into a long or shorter slouchy beanie. This is specifically for a crochet beanie.

Slouchy Crochet Beanies

Slouchy Crochet Beanies (CH0369)

This pic shows how some of these slouchy beanies could look like.  For even more details on the specifics of these 3 shown beanies,  please see Crochet Slouchy Beanie Hats.

I am finding that writing out detailed steps and over-fussy photos is taking up way too much time which means I cannot get on with other things I want to make, and everything just gets all clogged up with little getting published.

So I am going to do over the top simple.  Nothing too fancy or time consuming.  Simple drawings and whatever makes publishing easier.  I have often found inspiration from the work of others even when they only provided one drawing or one photo.  So I am going to trust that this will also work for you.

zz. Crochet Slouchy Beanie Hats

July 20, 2015 by Helena Asmus Lim Filed Under: CREATIONS, Crochet - How To, HOW TO, Wearables

I am about to start my chemotherapy. I have been told that in all likelihood I will lose my hair. While I have never been a beanie, hat kind of gal, I decided it is time I had a little venture into making some beanies. They might prove useful!

z.Crimping Pliers: How to use

May 24, 2015 by Helena Asmus Lim Filed Under: HOW TO, JEWELRY MAKING INFO, Jewelry Making Tools, Misc - How To

crimping pliersEven though you can use Flat Nose Pliers to crimp your crimp beads, until you begin to useCrimping Pliers, you won’t really know how much more professional crimping pliers will make your finished art-piece. The Crimp Plierswill help curve your crimp beads so that the wearer of your jewelry piece will not feel any sharp & annoying edges; which lessens the value of your jewelry.  If you have never used Crimping Pliers, it may take a bit of practice to get the hang of it but it will be worth every effort – to you and your customers/jewellery recipients.

zz.How to Use Hex Anvil

March 6, 2015 by Helena Asmus Lim Filed Under: HOW TO, JEWELRY MAKING INFO, Jewelry Making Tools, Misc - How To, Wire Work Tips

Hex Anvil for riveting

Hex Anvil for riveting

My first hex anvil.  In preparation for the exciting times of making some cold connections with rivets. (Big grin!)

This is a hexagonal steel anvil.  It is used as a base for riveting, drilling, and staking small parts.  It has been cased harded for long life.  It has 15 holes and 5 slots (of varying thickness for making rivets).  Measures 2inches, corner to corner.  7/8inch thick.  (Model: AN200, made in India).

Now, the next important question: how to use the hex anvil?

z. Beaded Warped Square Peyote Stitch – How To

January 26, 2015 by Helena Asmus Lim Filed Under: Beading Tips Techniques, HOW TO

To make a beaded warped square in Peyote Stitch is very easy.  Especially if you know how to make a flat beaded square. In fact, a warped square is easier than a flat square!

beaded-warped-square-004

Technically speaking, we are using a combination of Peyote Stitch and Herringbone Stitch.

The logic is: Peyote stitch for the flat surfaces; Herringbone stitch for increases.

z.Miyuki vs Toho seed beads

January 26, 2015 by Helena Asmus Lim Filed Under: Beading Tips Techniques, Jewelry Beads, JEWELRY MAKING INFO

I have lived under the illusion that there is nothing better, nothing more regular than Miyuki in seed beads.  But now that I have been Toho-ized, Toho seedbeads get my big thumbs up as far as their round seed beads are concerned.

Z. Geometric Beadwork: Warped Beaded Triangle

January 25, 2015 by Helena Asmus Lim Filed Under: Beading Tips Techniques, CREATIONS, HOW TO, Necklaces

“Warped Beaded Triangle” necklace came about as a result of me playing around with a basic shape, warping it .. and letting the resultant shape speak to and surprise you. I am still playing around and getting familiar with basic geometric shapes. In “Geometric Shapes: Tools for Beading“, I yakked about how important I think learning groundwork rules are in being able to achieve flow and freedom in the long run.
